Tutorial Tuesday - Santa Mouse Hat

Look at this cute Santa Mouse hat from My Sweet Potato 3!  It makes me want to learn how to make this hat, but of course I haven't crocheted for years and not sure if I even remember how.   However, I am sure many expert crocheters out there would like to try this project!

Happy Holidays....My Free Pattern for you!

It was the night before Christmas
and all through the House
not a creature was stirring
not even a Mouse!

My favorite Christmas story has inspired this adorable Santa Mouse hat for those little ones! And I have decided to share this pattern with all of you! If you don't crochet and just love the hat and want one, please visit my shop and I would be happy to make one for you, My Sweet Potato 3!

Make any simple beanie with earflaps in grey to the appropriate size. Here is the basic pattern that I use in my newborn hats (entire hat is made with weight #4 yarn):
Hook K- Chain 2
row 1: 7 sc in 1st chain, join with a slst, chain 2 (7)
row 2: 1 hdc in same st, 2hdc in each st around, join, chain 2 (14)
row 3: 1 hdc in same st, (1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next) repeat around, join, chain 2 (21)
row 4: 1 hdc in same st, (1 hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next) repeat around, join, chain 2 (28)
row 5: 1 hdc in same st, (1 hdc in next 3 st, 2 hdc in next) repeat around, join, chain 2 (35)
row 6-10: 1 hdc in each st around, join, chain 2 (35)
at the end of row 10 I just slst in next 3 st, chain 2,
row 1 of earflap: 1 hdc in next 9 st, chain 2 turn (10 st counting beginning chain 2)
row 2 of earflap: hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next 6 st, hdc2tog, chain 2, turn (8)
row 3: 1 hdc across, chain 2, turn (8)
row 4: hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next 4 st, hdc2tog, chain 2, turn (6)
row 5: 1 hdc across, chain 2, turn (6)
row 6: hdc2tog, hdc, hdc2tog, (4) if this is your first earflap go ahead and fasten off
For second earflap, count across the front of your hat 10 st, join in the 11th st, chain 2 and repeat the earflap directions. At the end of row 6 chain 1 and sc around entire hat for a finished look.

Ear: with White and Hook J
Chain 3, 10 dbl in 1st chain, join and switch to grey yarn
row 2: 1 sc in each stitch around, fasten off leaving enough yarn to sew ear to hat.

Santa Hat: with Red yarn and Hook I
Chain 3, 5dbl in 1st chain, join, chain 2 (5)
row 2: dbl in same st, 1 dbl in next 2 st, 2dbl in next stitch, 1 dbl in next st, join, chain 2 (7)
row 3: dbl in same st, (1 dbl in next 1 st, 2 dbl in next) repear around, join, chain 2 (12)
row 4: dbl in same st, (1 dbl in next 1 st, 2 dbl in next) repear around, join, chain 2 (16)
row 5: dbl in same st, (1 dbl in next 1 st, 2 dbl in next) repear around, join, chain 2 (24)
row 6: 1 dbl in each st around, join and fasten off leaving enough yarn to sew to hat.
With a fuzzy white yarn, join on back of hat and working in front loops only (sc, chain3) in each st around, fasten off.
I know attached the red yarn on the top of the hat and chained about 10, fasten off and attache a small white pom pom to the tip (I used the smallest 1" pom pom maker).

Now it is time to assemple the hat. The best way to do this is to just lay the hat down flat and look to see where placement looks the best. I sewed the ear on first then the hat. Complet the hat by adding red, white and grey ties on the earflaps.

I hope you loved the pattern. Please let me know if you find any part of it too confusing and I would be happy to try to clarify it for you! If you like this pattern please check my etsy shop for a few more I have written: My Sweet Potato 3

  1. What does Chain 3, 5dbl in 1st chain, join, chain 2 (5) mean? Does dbl mean double crochet?
